TMJ Therapy Treating Jaw Pain
Do you struggle with teeth grinding or clenching? Many patients do, often because of stress. What’s more, this condition, which is known as bruxism, routinely causes damage during sleep when patients are unable to avoid or amend this behavior. That’s why Dr. Holland recommends nightguards to help patients stop the damage caused by bruxism. Wearing a custom-made nightguard is often all it takes to manage bruxism’s symptoms or to stop teeth from grinding together completely.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction is a common side effect of untreated teeth grinding and clenching. The excessive pressure placed on the jaw leads to strain or stress on the jaw joints that can be extremely painful. TMJ disorder leads to a number of adverse effects including:
- Jaw pain and discomfort
- Limited jaw mobility making speaking and chewing difficult
- Grinding or popping noises when the mouth is opened and closed
- Complete jaw immobility
Regardless of whether TMJ dysfunction occurs due to nighttime teeth grinding and clenching or other unnecessary stress, nightguards are a good first step in treatment as they relieve stress on the jaw joints. If we determine more advanced treatment is necessary, we work with patients to develop an effective treatment plan.
